It is not the end of history \u2013 history is accelerating. With the spread of Islamic State, the awakening of the Chinese and Russian empires, crashes and the \u201cUberization\u201d of the economy \u2013 there are increasing numbers of conflicts. We are living in an era of disruption, i.e. improbable, extreme and irreversible events. They throw democracies into turmoil, calling into question the West’s dominance over world history and the central role of national governments in the management of the economy and the international system.<\/span><\/p>\n There are as many hopes for the future as there are risks, from new sources of growth to the increasing power of an open society. But we have to bridge the gap that has appeared between the speed of change and the passivity of political response.
